Your hygienist will remove plaque, which contains bacteria that causes decay and gum disease. Tarter or calculus is hardened plaque that adheres to teeth and is removed by using special instruments. Stains on the surface are removed by using a polishing paste. Some patients will require a deep cleaning due to periodontal or gum disease.
